Wetherby Lab

The Wetherby Lab, the UK's largest lab, is a busy place, processing 3000 – 3500 samples daily, Tuesday through Saturday.  The 150 IDEXXers at Wetherby, work across an extended day, with the Specimen Processing team starting at 4 a.m. and the late team in Histology closing the working day at 10:30 p.m. In addition to dogs and cats, Wetherby receives many samples from zoo animals and has processed everything from monkeys, lions, tigers, iguana, armadillos, hedgehogs, snakes, frogs, an array of birds and once even a skunk named "Lucky."

"Error Free, On Time" is the motto of the Wetherby lab, and credit their focus on quality as one of their biggest strengths of the lab.

"We have a great Quality team based in the UK led by Anne-Marie Porritt ," says Serena Boylan, Regional Laboratory General Manager for Northern Europe.

"Quality is at the heart of everything we do," says Anne Marie. "As a diagnostic lab our customers must have confidence in the results we are producing."

Wetherby's focus on quality starts the moment a new staff member joins the team. As part of their staff induction they hold a session outlining their Quality Management System, The Way We Work. "Everyone attends this session, it provides a high level but underpinning knowledge of how our laboratory operates," said Anne Marie. "All staff then undergo a detailed and tailored training programme for their department." As staff become more experienced and their training progresses to a point where they are considered experienced and competent to be a trainer, they participate in "train the trainer' sessions.

Jamie Williamson
Laboratory Manager - North/South Carolina

As the laboratory manager of the Greensboro Reference Lab in North Carolina and the Greenville Day Lab in South Carolina, I serve alongside an amazing team of 35 laboratory professionals from diverse educational and professional backgrounds who take pride in their contributions to the IDEXX Purpose. I experience great satisfaction knowing my team directly impacts the health and well-being of over 2,500 pets every day.

Prior to IDEXX, I was a laboratory professional with the United States Air Force for over 27 years, serving my last 10 years as a laboratory manager both stateside and in remote locations throughout the world. When the opportunity to transition my skillset from military to civilian and human to veterinary practice presented itself in April 2017, I took the plunge.

The thing that most captivated me about IDEXX is the broad spectrum of opportunity for all employees to grow and advance within the company. In addition, I was quickly enveloped by the IDEXX community which mirrors the Air Force concept of “Wingmen” ─ Never Leave an Airmen Behind. IDEXX truly is a company that values the success of every member at every level and actively reaches out on a daily basis to ensure you have all the support needed to be a success.

IDEXX has continually worked hard to keep me engaged and help me develop the skills that I need to further grow as a leader and I am empowered to take a similar approach with my team. I do everything possible to ensure that our employees enjoy work, feel successful, and see a clear, long-term career path. I am so proud to be part of the Reference Laboratory Team within the great IDEXX family and look forward too many successful years to come as a part of this wonderful team!

IDEXX’s global network of reference laboratories play a critical role in delivering insightful information to our veterinary practices. With a strong focus on operational excellence and the sharing of best practices, our team of laboratory professionals are dedicated, driven and results oriented – while focused on the pet and the practice at the end of each sample.
